Who can participate in the Teacher Exchange program?

Secondary Teachers

Any New Mexico high school English teacher is welcome to get involved. We are especially eager to work with teachers of either seniors or juniors, though teachers of sophomores will be considered as well. Secondary teachers are welcome to participate regardless of whether they teach AP, remedial, ESL, mainstream, etc., and we welcome teachers of both public and private schools. We are happy to work with teachers from any school district; if your district is far from UNM, we will do our best to find a partner for you as well. We currently recruit at least 10 secondary teachers per semester.

University or College Teachers

Writing instructors at UNM or CNM are also welcome to apply. Though you will largely discuss English 101 and 102 with your partner, we are also happy to work with instructors of English 219 or 220 from either UNM or CNM, or CNM instructors of English 100. We currently recruit 10 university instructors per semester and hope to include community college instructors as well.

How do I apply for the program?

For secondary teachers or CNM teachers, email Erin Lebacqz, the program coordinator, or Lupe Marentes, the program assistant, at teacherx@unm.edu.

For UNM instructors, please contact Erin Lebacqz at teacherx.unm.edu or look for her in Humanities 249. She also holds informative meetings once each semester to recruit participants for the following semester; look for announcements about these meetings on the TA Listserve.

What sort of time commitment is involved?

Participating teachers work with their partners for one semester, not one entire academic year. You may sign up for either a fall or spring semester, depending on your preference. During the semester, you will need to attend two 2-hour meetings at UNM, when all participants will get together for training and collaboration. Outside of these two meetings, you will also need to meet with your partner a few times, whenever is convenient for both of you.

In addition to planning and collaboration time, the exchange requires that each teacher observe their partner for one work day (sub pay is provided for secondary teachers), and that UNM teachers teach in one high school classroom (with the high school teacher) roughly three times.

How much support will I get from my partner?

As this project is strictly collaborative, you will work with your partner consistently throughout the semester. Partners are introduced and begin working together at our first meeting each semester; from that point on, you will work with your partner independent of the rest of the group. You and your partner will create curriculum and writing prompts together, and discuss and respond to student writing together.

As a secondary teacher, how do I get my administrator to agree to participate in the program?

When you apply, you will be asked to name your school and principal. Erin Lebacqz, the program coordinator, will take care of contacting your administrator and ensuring that you will be allotted the necessary time to complete the project. She will also contact your district office to ensure you will be paid for your efforts.

As an administrator or Department Chair, how do I nominate a teacher?

If you are an administrator or Department Chair and would like to nominate one of your teachers to participate in the program, please email Erin Lebacqz, the program coordinator, at teacherx@unm.edu, or call her for more information at 277-6155, and indicate that you are an administrator or Department Chair, not a teacher. The program coordinator, will then contact the teacher you’ve nominated to ask if they would like to participate in the program.

Will I get paid for participating in the NMETE?

Secondary Teachers

You will be paid an hourly stipend from your district. Teachers working in APS schools are paid for up to 20 hours of work. Many other surrounding districts follow this model, but stipends and number of hours available may vary by district.

UNM Teachers

You will be paid in either the form of a one-time scholarship or a one-time stipend for your participation. For details, contact Erin Lebacqz at teacherx@unm.edu.
